Real
Estate is My Fourth Career
|
| |
In my previous
careers I learned how to market, deliver service to my clients, and
provide customer satisfaction. I grew up around Boston, went to the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and graduated in the late
sixties. After graduation I started my first career as a Naval Officer
and Naval Aviator. I have seen a lot of the country and some of the
world including just about every good European port from Venice, Italy
to Kristiansand, Norway. In the early seventies the Chief of Naval
Operation said, "Blessed are the recruiters for they shall inherit
the Navy." As a recruiter, I was faced with the task of finding college
graduates to become "officers and gentlemen." (I also recruited the
first woman civilian to become a Naval Aviator.) I had a marketing
plan for one school in my recruiting area and the Navy hired a big
bucks Madison Avenue firm to develop a marketing plan for my entire
recruiting area. The score after three months was

I
left the Navy and since I had a gold watch, three-piece suit, and
a leather briefcase, I started my second career as a consultant. I
was successful in this career because I figured out early on that
all I had to do was provide better customer service than the competition.
I started with one client on a four thousand dollar purchase order.
A little over a year later I was developing for that client the entire
management information system for an eleven billion dollar project. |

About
10 years ago I decided to take a sabbatical from the real world and
go back to school. I chose The University of Michigan, of course.
To make a long story short, I fell into my third career kicking and
screaming: teaching required courses in Technical Communication in
the College of Engineering. While it is not quite true that communicating
with engineers is only slightly less difficult than communicating
with the dead, it is true that few engineering students had a strong
desire to take my courses: fewer than 1 in 5. At the end of the courses,
about 4 out of 5 felt the course was excellent. |

Several
years ago, when I was thinking about my fourth career, I talked with
a Vice President of Management Recruiters here in Ann Arbor. He said,
"Go back east or learn how to sell something." I love Ann Arbor so
I never went back.
